While touring the Caribbean coast of Colombia, the While touring the Caribbean coast of Colombia, the dominant thought in my mind was that the country has an “embarrassment of riches.” Chief among them, to me, and the locals who referred to it as “paradise,” was Playa Blanca. It was named for its white-sand beach but also has crystal clear water. The first dark patch you see in the photo is sea grass, the second is fish-filled coral. For about $20 per night I slept in a beach-front bungalow but the area is under pressure from developers. They, from what I’ve seen, would make Playa Blanca just like every place else. The developers lost their legal fight and residents have lost their lives to protect their property.
